Naïma's stomach clenched, and she flattened her ears against her neck so as not to hear the judges' murmurings.
Her routine had been better than ever, but only six dragons had ever scored a perfect ten in all three events, including both her parents. She needed to know she could be counted among them at last.
She forced herself to breathe calmly, stumble her way through the prayer she had created for her daily meditations. Every moment, every miniscule mistake replayed itself in her mind. Naïma winced when she recalled how a hindclaw had snagged in her tail on the second-to-last dive. It had been small, but everything counted.
The judges spoke.
Green eyes blinked open, and Naïma started to preen her feathers anxiously.
Names and numbers spilled from the elder dragons' jaws. She held her breath.
They paused.
"And now for our final contestant, who has flown her way into acrobatics history and earned a ten in every category. With a final score of thirty points, I present our winner, Naïma!"

"I'm not paying that much for a stupid bauble. Find someone else to scam," the fire dragon snapped.
"Yesterday, you said you'd do anything for one!" Oltyth roared back. "So last night I worked my tail off to make this piece of—"
His grandfather raised his gravelly voice. "I hope you're being nice to my customers, Oltyth." He never looked up from his own work, where a pair of young shadow dragons were giggling over an array of glassy charms.
Oltyth clenched his teeth. "Fine. Look, the plant in this globe has enough magic too keep it going for an entire year, and I pretty much drained myself to do this." He swished the orb for emphasis, water splashing gently at its sides. "So if I don't sell it today, I won't be able to get enough work done to make up for it. Forty silver pieces."
"What makes you think I have that kind of money? Twenty-five."
"I know you have a hoard. You're wearing freaking gold collars, man. Thirty-five."
"Thirty."
"Thirty-five." Oltyth's short fingers clamped more tightly on the glass sphere.
"Thirty-one, then."
"Thirty-two silver pieces, and no less." They glared defiantly at one another.
Smoke curled out of the other dragon's nostrils. "Deal."
He loved fire dragons.
