I've designed a sort of magical zodiac/tarot, which is basically just a set of personality types given weird mythological-sounding titles. Enjoy! See if you can spot yourself or your characters in here, and as always, feel free to suggest reforms or expand on things I may have (ie probably) missed.
The Chalice: Luck, abundance, generosity.
Those marked by the sign of the Chalice are happy individuals for whom Lady Luck seems to have reserved all her finest gifts. Wherever luck is involved, the Chalice prospers. They always somehow manage to benefit from a situation, even in defeat. Chalices should be careful, though, as their prosperity can also foster envy in others and avarice in themselves. At their best, Chalices work to ensure not only their own but their community's prosperity. At their worst, the Chalice uses their ability to turn a profit to further their own greedy, sometimes sinister goals. (Profit isn't only restricted to material wealth.)
The Tower:Inner strength, perspective, isolation
Those marked by the sign of the tower are generally studious, inquisitive individuals, marked by a propensity to isolate themselves from others. As such, they often come off as aloof or self-centered. This very isolation is what gives them their perspective, however; they are able to see the bigger picture, looking at things from different angles. Towers should beware, though: knowledge may be a fine thing, but it doesn't do any good unless it's put to use.
The Key:Curiosity, ingenuity, abstraction.
Those marked by the sign of the key are creative thinkers, able to think outside the box and approach problems in ways few others would think of. They are often tinkerers and inventors, enjoying puzzles that require abstract thinking and ingenuity to solve. They are naturally curious, full of ideas and concepts, but do not always have the skill or the patience to realize their ideas. Keys often lose sight of the original goal in their pursuit of gratification, and easily become bored with a project if it is not immediately rewarding.
The Serpent:Adaptability, resourcefulness, potency.
Those marked by the sign of the serpent are cunning, adaptable, and intelligent. They are quick thinkers and are good at using their wits to get out of trouble. Their mind is their best weapon: they are gifted negotiators and manipulators. Serpents are often quite skilled, but frequently lack the will to realize their full potential. While naturally charismatic, laziness and complacency can dull their native intelligence, and they may come off as treacherous or unscrupulous. Serpents may need to be reminded to check their arrogance, and not to become enamored with their own abilities.
The Wheel:Unpredictability, innovation, fate.
Those marked by the sign of the wheel often seem to the the plaything of happenstance. They are unpredictable, often dangerous individuals. They always manage to be where the most opportunity can be found. Wheels don't normally let themselves become victims of luck, however. They are often quite innovative; a good Wheel knows how to roll with the punches and make the best out of a seemingly unwinnable situation. Sometimes, however, fate has other plans, and Wheels can often find themselves signing up for way more than they bargained for.
The Crook:Power, wisdom, authority.
Those marked by the sign of the crook are natural leaders, and seek mastery over other individuals. They seek power through wisdom, and can be either benevolent or tyrannical. Crooks have a natural magnetism that draws out the subordinate tendencies in people. In exchange, they must bear a great deal of responsibility, as their actions are widely felt amongst the group and may affect the fates of many. There will always be those who are not affected by the Crook's mystique, and Crooks can easily fall prey to zealotry in their bid for control.
The Portal:Self-reflection, choices, potential.
Those with the sign of the portal are marked by their need for self-identification and actualization. They are pensive and individualistic. The Portal is a bundle of potential. Their paths are strongly affected by the choices they make. Fate merely shows them the door; the Portal must decide whether they go through it. While their self-reflectiveness might benefit them on a personal level, they must be sure not to get distracted by their own internal struggles and pay attention to their surroundings. Portals can easily find themselves falling victim to stagnation as they meander along the path of the self-- a path which does not necessarily need to be taken alone.
The Moon:Intuitiveness, protection, dreams.
Those marked by the sign of the Moon have strong instincts and powers of perception. They are very good at sensing the demeanor of others and are good judges of character. Counterpart to the Sun, the Moon is a very passive symbol, preferring to follow their intuition rather than puzzling things through bit by bit. Being of a spiritual bent, dreams have a strong effect on the Moon. The Moons is also associated with protection; Moons rely on their faith to survive hardship. Relying too much on instinct has obvious drawbacks, however, and the Moon should not so easily trust that everything will turn out for the best.
The Sun:Integrity, ambition, analysis.
Those marked by the sign of the Sun are critical and ambitious. Counterpart to the Moon, the Sun does not wait for the answers to come to them, instead seeking things out of their own volition. Maintaining continuity is important to Suns. They are highly active, however, their grand designs tend to be rather rigid in structure, not allowing for mistakes or unfavorable circumstances. They can often be blunt in their approach and lack the subtlety of other, more passive signs. Ambition, integrity, and discipline are all watchwords of the Sun. It is important to note for Suns that even the best-laid plans can go awry, and that sometimes biding one's time is the best tactic.
The Knot: Reliability, loyalty, practicality.
Those marked by the sign of the Knot value bonds of blood and friendship. They often act as the binding agent in a group, and use teamwork to overcome challenges. While they are practical and good problem solvers, they often tend to make things more complicated for themselves, and can be overwhelmed by their own complex emotions. Outsiders may also find the knot similarly inscrutable; while they form bonds well, one hardly ever truly gets to know a Knot in their entirety. They can be quite stubborn and obtuse in a culmination of their myriad frustrations.
The Oracle:Subjectivity, observation, prescience.
Those marked by the sign of the Oracle are primarily observers; they watch the flow of events and pick out subtle details that others might miss. While the Tower tends to see the forest for the trees, the Oracle is the opposite, focusing more on the nuances and minutia. As such they are very good at reading the flow of a situation, and can predict outcomes quite accurately. They are a very abstract symbol. Oracles can fall victim to passiveness, being content to simply observe. For all their wisdom, oracles rarely act, preferring to support and instruct others rather than take an active role.
The Scales:Balance, truth, equanimity.
Those marked by the sign of the scales stand for truth, justice, and equality. Scales are level-headed individuals who take it upon themselves to distribute fairness amongst a group. They are good at solving disputes and taking charge of a situation. Tipped the wrong way, though, the Scales may fall victim to personal prejudices, and their strong feelings of duty often lead them to act against their better judgement. Being so intent on external conflict, however, can often cause them to ignore their own emotions and forego gratification, and thus they are very stoic. They are strict, efficient, and egalitarian.
