No, not ranks at all. Classes. XD Like druid, cleric, etc.

but then again, if each is his own class, why does this make sense? Feels to me like any sort of "badge" gotta have a lot less freedom

Think of it as a form of degree then. In college and university you'd get different degrees depending in what you specialized in, but different degrees aren't necessarily better then others. so yes, a doctors degree may be considered better then a nurse degree but an arcetecture is equal to a welder(?) (just makng random connections). The badge is more to symbolise your specialisation and skill then rank. The medal/ sigik is given to you by your master/ mentor when you "graduate". Of course, i think that's complicating things.

Yeah, like that. Though it doesn't have to be awarded by an instructor or anything. You could even just whittle your own if you felt like it lmao. It's not SUPPOSED to be rigid. =P A wizard might wear a sigil like you would wear a varsity jacket, or a fandom reference t-shirt, or a uniform, etc. The possibilities are endless. XD

Now that that's out of my system... More headcanons!

-All formally educated wizards have a set of basic spells for everyday uses. E.g.: a spark spell for lighting campfires, a light spell to act as a torch, etc. Other examples would be appreciated!
